BUYER'S GUIDE

Horizontal and Vertical Lifelines

When a worker moves continuously along an elevated level, a horizontal lifeline rigged between two anchorage points at the same height gives continuous anchorage and limits swing injuries. Temporary anchorage lines are engineered to be installed and removed easily for short-term jobs, horizontally or vertically.

  1. A horizontal lifeline acts as a mobile anchorage for lanyards, SRLs or fall arrest blocks as the worker moves sideways.
  2. Vertical anchorage lines use a rope grab that locks onto the line and arrests the fall immediately; connect the energy absorber between the harness front or rear attachment and the rope grab with a karabiner.
  3. When using rope and rope grabs, always make sure the line is taut between the anchor points.
  4. Size the end anchorages correctly: a horizontal lifeline needs 12 kN for one person plus 1 kN for each additional person, and end anchorages should take twice the anticipated load.
  5. Systems such as the T-Line combine lifeline, fall arrest and rescue in one unit, cancel the pendulum effect and can span up to 24m without intermediate supports.
  6. Fixed line systems should be inspected, repaired and revalidated annually.
