BUYER'S GUIDE

Choosing a Safety Padlock for Lockout

A safety padlock in a lockout/tagout programme is a personal device: each authorised worker fits their own lock to the isolation point and keeps the only key, so the equipment cannot be re-energised while they are still working on it. It is not meant to secure property.

  1. Apply one person, one lock, one key. A key retaining feature, where the key cannot be removed while the shackle is open, prevents a lock being left unlocked.
  2. Pick the shackle to suit the hazard: steel for strength, non-conductive nylon or insulated shackles near live electrical parts, and cable shackles for awkward or multiple points.
  3. Choose the keying system deliberately. Keyed Differ suits personal locks, Keyed Alike suits one worker isolating several points, and Master or Grand Master keys belong only under a controlled procedure.
  4. Standardise colour, shape or size across the site, for example one colour per department or trade, so a lockout lock is never confused with an ordinary lock.
  5. Keep a key register (key charting) so that no two personal locks share a key and replacement locks can be ordered correctly.

Summarised from the manufacturer's catalogue and the general requirements for lockout devices in OSHA 29 CFR 1910.147. Device selection must follow your written energy isolation procedure and site risk assessment.
