BUYER'S GUIDE

Choosing a Valve Lockout

A valve lockout keeps a valve in its safe position, usually closed, so that fluid, gas or steam cannot reach the work area.

  1. Match the device to the valve type: ball valve, gate valve handwheel, butterfly valve, plug valve or gas cylinder.
  2. Measure the handwheel diameter, handle length or pipe diameter before ordering.
  3. Adjustable or universal lockouts cover many sizes with fewer devices.
  4. Check the material against the temperature and chemicals at the valve.

Summarised from the manufacturer's catalogue and the general requirements for lockout devices in OSHA 29 CFR 1910.147. Device selection must follow your written energy isolation procedure and site risk assessment.
